Spring Photoshoot Ideas for Little Ones
Spring is a busy time of year for our family. Between holidays and birthdays, there are lots of memories to be made! As a mother, I like to capture as much as I can on camera. In this post we will go over how and why to schedule a spring photoshoot, how to select a location, and other necessary items for success!
We like to do St. Patrick’s day photos, Easter photos, general spring photos, and Birthday photos- since my Rowan has a May birthday. As much as I want to capture the memories in the form of photographs, I don’t want to spend these special days behind a camera. What’s my answer? Schedule the photo session.
Why Do I Schedule Photoshoots?
Usually I will take photos of Rowan featuring items relating to a specific holiday the day before the holiday actually happens. Why don’t I just take a bunch of candids? Well, here’s the thing. I’m kinda the worst at documenting things for my little. For example…. Did Rowan get an Easter basket this year? Yes, but I didn’t take a picture because I was too busy playing with her. Did we go to church on Easter Sunday? Yes- but I didn’t get any great family pictures because I was too busy being with her. Did Rowan do an egg hunt? Yes- but I was too busy watching her clap her hands every time she found an egg to take any videos.
Sure, one day one day I may be upset I don’t have any photos or videos from this time. But on days like this, I am grateful I’m living in the moment instead of behind a screen. Life’s about balance, right? Instead of being behind a screen during these memory-making-moments, I am present in the moment. THIS is why I schedule themed photoshoots with her. I can capture her, without taking away from what’s really important.
What Sort of Props Do I need?
I’m a huge fan of banners. You can see some banners in one of the Easter photos we took this year. Banners set the tone for the photo, and they tell your audience what you’re celebrating. I also like handheld props that coordinate with the holiday. For Easter we used a gorgeous egg garland, some stuffed carrots, and some stuffed bunnies. 99% of the items we use in our photoshoots can be found in the Target dollar bin. And let me tell you, that Target dollar bin is my weakness!
*TIP: Find a Bright Location
Find a space in your home (or around your home if you’re doing an outdoor shoot) that has a bright background, and a bright/clean floor. Sometimes I put Rowan on an all white bed, or I put a white fur rug down. Bright whites reflect light and therefore causes the light to bounce back on your subject’s face.
Some Sweet Examples
St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is a big holiday for my Irish family. As an Irish dancer, I am very into this holiday, and I just HAD to see my sweet girl in a kilt. I cannot wait to see her in her first Irish dancing dress! Also- FUN FACT: the green shirt Rowan is wearing says “Luck, Laughter, and Limericks” (another quality Target find). I NEEDED to get it because when I lived in Ireland, I lived in the city of Limerick. See- it has sentimental value! Rowan was NOT in a good mood that day, so we got what we got. That’s the thing- you never know how a toddler is going to feel.
Easter was April 1st this year. We took these photos the day before. Check out some of my favorites!
General Spring Photoshoot Ideas
We haven’t done these yet (mostly because it’s basically January 95th in Cincinnati, and we are waiting for warmer weather), but I will update you when they happen. I plan on taking Rowan to some formal gardens where there are lots of flowers, and oh my goodness does she love flowers! I would love to get her in a field of flowers in a few different looks. Maybe one just standing in the field, and another where she’s on a blanket enjoying a tea party with her stuffed animals. Stay tuned!
We are welcoming baby #2 next month! (Holy cow! That happened fast!) and I cannot wait to see what we can come up with when it comes to sibling and family photos. I honestly don’t have many ideas, but I’m sure Pinterest will come through! Updates to follow!
Rowan’s birthday is in May, and her theme is still being kept a secret. But I promise, I will share it with you guys! I can’t wait to see photos of her big day! Honestly, I can’t believe she will be two! I will be sure to send an update about her birthday photos!
